Security QuestionFriday, Jun. 12, 2009 3:42 AMWe had another security company salesdroid waltzing through the neighborhood yesterday evening. My wife answered the door and suffered through the first part of the sales pitch, in which salesdroid assured us he wasn't really selling anything, just doing a survey of the neighborhood sort of kind of and do you have an alarm system? When she acknowledged that we were covered by another security firm, salesdroid took that as an opening. Q: How long have you been with Other Security Firm? Q: Can I put this sign in front of your house? Q: (Walking away.) "Just trying to be friendly." Folks, this is called social engineering. The salesdroid attempted to position himself as a friendly sort asking harmless questions, and taking advantage of our natural instinct to be helpful. Note that when rebuffed, he plays the guilt trip card - "I'm just trying to be friendly." Sorry, my real friends don't have details on my alarm system, either.
