Why Does Johnny Hate?

Thursday, Jun. 11, 2009 3:47 AM

Remember how, when the Department of Homeland Security issued its report that right-wing extremism was a significant threat, that white supremacist groups might be looking to recruit new members, particularly veterans?

Remember how critics complained the report was Obama insulting the troops, even though the report had been undertaken during the Bush Administration?

Yet the past two weeks have seen two incidents that can only be portrayed as domestic terrorism - the murder of Dr. George Tiller, and yesterday's shooting at Washington, D.C's. Holocaust Museum.

America needs to take a long look at its own homegrown hate and religious extremism before setting forth to remake the Middle East into a Christian paradise. (And, no, I'm not talking about enacting that sorry piece of legislation on homegrown terrorism drafted by Senator Joe Lieberman.)

The Miss USA organization has announced a new ruling regarding Miss California, Carrie Prejean, who landed firmly in the middle of a debate about same-sex marriage.

Prejean will be losing her crown for failure to meet her contractual obligations since the previous ruling that preserved her title in the face of allegations of impropriety.

More jury duty silliness - despite being notified nearly a month in advance, and reminded several times since, it somehow turned out that no one was assigned to cover my shift yesterday - despite a call to my supervisor on the day before after my jury duty was confirmed.

A number of single vacation days have also gone by without a replacement being scheduled, and it's always being blamed on the scheduling person (who was sick the other day, and NOT the person who I called).
