Oversight? What's That?Friday, Jun. 22, 2007 10:34 AMIt should come as no surprise that Vice President Dick Cheney believes himself to be above the law. This time, it's an executive order pertaining to the handling of classified information essentially a directive to record and report who handles what. But Cheney's office has ignored the directive, and his aides even suggested abolishing the office which holds oversight authority. (Kind of like the move to kill off the inspector general's office in charge of Iraq.) And Cheney himself has apparently affirmed that, well, his office isn't really part of the Executive Branch and is therefore exempt. Which begs the question: if you're not part of the Executive Branch, then what are you? And wouldn't that mean you can't claim executive privilege and lock up all your deep, dark secrets? Accountability. It's what's for dinner.
