Scared Straight?

Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 3:47 AM

A police officer in San Jose, California, is facing questions about the alleged mock arrest of a teenaged boy. Said boy had had sex with the officer's daughter (also a minor), and the officer decided to stage his own version of 'Scared Straight.'

The key point, legal experts offer, is whether or not the boy was actually handcuffed during the incident. This would constitute 'false imprisonment,' and therefore be a violation of the boy's civil rights.

I'm not a big fan of Anthony Bourdain, but Michael Ruhlman has offered a preview of Bourdain's upcoming book, Medium Raw by way of Bourdain's opening remarks: "So You Wanna Be a Chef?"

I heartily approve. It's not wrong to have a passion for food and cooking - in fact, the right kind of passion for these things can only help improve the state of nutrition/health in this country.

However, Bourdain is right about the kind of hours and hard work you'll be facing. I've never been in a professional kitchen, but between the kind of under-the-gun, time-pressure work I do as a video editor, and I'm enough of a cook to see the sense in what Bourdain says.

Or, to borrow from one of my voiceover instructors, "This stuff is hard!"
