Travails of the Chronically DishonestTuesday, Aug. 10, 2010 3:47 AMPerhaps the best reply to the 'will of the people' argument against same-sex marriage came from Ted Olson, in response to FOX News' Chris Wallace: "Would you like FOX News' right to free speech put up to a vote?" But the distortion of Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling continues, with conservatives carping that Walker said morals have nothing to do with the law. Untrue. He said moral disapproval has nothing to do with the law. That is, my disgust at your smoking is no basis for a law banning smoking. Rep. John Boehner told NBC's David Gregory that it's worth looking at repealing the 14th Amendment. But again, the only part of the 14th Amendment that gets mentioned is birthright citizenship - the dire threat of 'anchor babies.' The 14th Amendment also contains provisions about equal protection under the law, due process, and state representation in Congress. Do we have an immigration problem? Certainly. Is it best addressed by taking a razor blade to the Constitution? No. Conservativism is not inherently bad when it dictates a moderate approach; what's going on here is that raving nutjobs have hijacked 'conservative' and replaced it with 'intellectually dishonest' (and/or 'blithering idiots').
