A Teachable Moment?

Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling against California's Proposition 8 - the ban against same-sex marriage approved by voters in 2008 - is a triumph over hate and fear.

But the lesson? Yet to be learned, it seems.

And it's not just that the ruling was appealed almost immediately, but a broader look at where conservative and Christian values are taking this country. Anti-immigrant hatred in Arizona and other states, not only in 'show us your papers' legislation, but attacking the 14th Amendment (which, incidentally, also includes a small note about equal protection under the law and due process). Screaming fits about plans for a prayer room (not a mosque) in the vicinity of Ground Zero. Nutjob con-artists like Glenn Beck encouraging folks to go on shooting sprees, then saying, "Who, me?"

Three cheers for Christian values like lying about the reasons to go to war, torturing prisoners ... and dare we point out that Mark Sanford trotted out the 'King David' defense to justify his acts of adultery?

But, no, it's activist judges and socialist liberals and teh gay that's destroying society, instead of the insidious and inevitable outcome of harboring hatred in one's mind, heart, and soul.

Go figure.
