Robertson's Revelation?

Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 3:49 AM

Happy Veterans' Day. If you are one of those who have served in our country's military, thank you.

"So you're dealing with a -- not a religion, you're dealing with a political system. And I think we should treat it as such, and treat its adherents as such, as we would members of the Communist Party or members of some fascist group," says televangelist Pat Robertson.

Clearly, Pat is living in some alternate reality where being a Communist is a crime, punishable by law.

Which faith is the one browbeating people about the sanctity of marriage, including spending millions of dollars on out-of-state political campaigns? Oh, that's right: CHRISTIANITY.

Which faith is the one whose senior clergy lobbied for an amendment barring federal funds from being used on abortion? Oh, that's right: CHRISTIANITY.

Which faith is the one where a man walked into a church and shot a doctor down in cold blood, and has 'supporters' trying to auction off 'collectibles' on eBay for his legal defense? Oh, that's right: CHRISTIANITY.

Which faith had a prominent minister advocating the assassination of a foreign leader? Why, CHRISTIANITY ... and Pat Robertson is the one who suggested we should assassinate Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.

Meddling in politics? World domination? Violence? As Christ once said, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

And my usual Grinchy observation about the 'Christmas Season,' which apparently began before the last trick-or-treaters were home and out of their costumes.

Enough, already! It continues to be disgusting that we're obsessed with material wealth two months out from a day that has become more synonymous with greed than any religious underpinnings. We're coming out of a recession; we're still embroiled in two wars; and our elected represenatives are having pissing contests over healthcare reforms that they, personally, are not affected by ... but we can't even wait until the day after Thanksgiving.

There will doubtless be the usual lawsuits and teeth-gnashing about putting 'Christ' back into 'Christmas,' which I find equally distasteful, because they're just as devoid of meaning as the commercialism.

Inevitably, someone mentions the story of the 'Christmas Truce' of 1914 - when British and German soldiers set aside hostilities to celebrate the holiday. We'll find no such benificence today; instead, we'll find people - screwed by bank executives walking off with billions of our tax dollars and charging us usurous interest rates - ready to claw one another's eyes out for that $399 flat-screen TV set.

And to think the moral of 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' was humorous when it first aired.
