Not The Clucking PointFriday, Nov. 07, 2008 8:36 AMI voted against Proposition 8 for the simple reason that it's discrimination. Some opponents of the measure are using the line that chickens in California now have more rights than gay people, since Proposition 2, which sets stricter standards for farm animals, also passed. Please don't. It's a bad comparison. Chickens aren't human beings, gay or straight - unless you want to point out that chickens are treated better than homeless people, children in Africa, or prisoners at Guantanamo. Beyond which, if I put a chicken in a cage, or raise it for the purposes of food, I'm not discriminating against the chicken any more than I am against a farm-raised trout. Let's keep the focus where it needs to be, on the decision by humans to exclude other humans from the benefits of being married under the law.
Bindyree aka Brin - 2008-11-07 17:36:32 The 'chickens versus homoexuals' thing is best stated thusly: "Within the parameters of this election, farm animals were granted more rights than homosexuals were". Yes, to anthropormorphize it and make believe the animals are more entitled to live their lives than human beings is absurd, but the qualifiers in the wording above is pretty specific. :-) Bindyree aka Brin - 2008-11-07 17:37:40 And the above is what happens when I don't have caffeine first.
