Pakistan's Bhutto Assassinated

Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007 11:12 AM

Reuters is reporting that former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was shot and killed earlier today, along with at least 20 other people.

An attack was also made on former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but failed. Sharif is calling for General Pervez Musharraf to step down immediately.

Musharraf and our own President Bush are, of course, blaming those horrible extremists who are trying to undermine Pakistan's democracy. (We'll just ignore the fact that Musharraf's recent State of Emergency included jailing and reconstituting Pakistan's supreme court, closing down all but government-sponsored media outlets, and crackdowns on lawyers.)
