You, Sir, Are No Darth Vader ...

Monday, Oct. 22, 2007 4:24 AM

Ive been asked if that nickname bothers me, and the answer is, no, he said. After all, Darth Vader is one of the nicer things Ive been called recently.
-- Vice President Dick Cheney, at a speech before the Washington Institute for Near East Policy

No, no, no. Cheney isn't anything close to Darth Vader, apart from having his existence dependent upon technology (his pacemaker).

Vader found redemption at the end of his life, and got to be a sparkly-blue Force ghost. If Cheney manifests as a ghost, it'll be more like Jacob Marley.

Above all, if Cheney is Vader, that would mean Bush is Emperor Palpatine, who was a shrewd political operator and a man possessed of insight and intelligence.

On the other hand, Cheney asserted once more that the United States will not allow Iran to come into the possession of nuclear weapons.

This is not 'diplomacy with consequences.' This is saber-rattling to build the illusion of inevitability - now that they've made the threat, they must carry it out, or America will be seen as 'lacking the guts for the fight.'

It's the same rhetoric that paved the way for our adventure in Iraq.
