Wait And See

British authorities have made several arrests in the wake of two attempted car bombings and a similar attack at Glasgow airport.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is already whipping up the terrorism parade by stating that the perpetrators are very clearly connected with al-Qaeda.

I'll wait for some facts. In the wake of the 'bottled sports drink' scare that had us worrying about budding chemists brewing up harm in the airplane toilet, adopting a bunker mentality isn't going to serve anyone, least of all two of the largest free nations on the planet.

Not to mention which, what if it is al-Qaeda? What does this prove or disprove, apart from the idiocy of the 'we'll fight 'em over there, so we won't have to fight 'em at home' tune that still gets airplay in America?

Terrorism is about taking the fight to the enemy's home ground, where they feel safe, and pressing all those buttons that are considered off-limits in a civilized setting. I'm not saying we have to walk bravely amidst the flying bullets (at least, not until Strolling John McCain does so without a vest and a 100-soldier escort and air support) but we do need to be mindful of the changes we adopt and advocate, as to whether they are actually sensible.
