STOLEN: The Maltese FalconMonday, Feb. 12, 2007 5:32 PMA piece of movie history has been stolen. John Konstin, owner of John's Grill in San Francisco, says that someone broke into a cabinet on the restaurant's second floor and stole the Maltese Falcon. Several books about, and others written by, Dashiell Hammet were also taken. Hammet immortalized John's Grill in the novel about the infamous black bird and detective Sam Spade. The Falcon on display was a replica used in promotional photos by the movie studio, and was signed by actor Elisha Cook, Jr., who played Wilmer, one of Sidney Greenstreet's unfortunate hirelings. (Cook also played lawyer Samuel T. Cogley in the Star Trek episode, "Court Martial.") Konstin is offering a $25,000 reward for the return of the statue and the books. (I happened to stop by John's Grill back in January, and I have to say the peppercorn steak is fantastic.)
