Coal In Your Stocking: Todd ShriberWednesday, Dec. 27, 2006 4:46 PMThe story you are about to hear is true, and we didn't change the name, because this guy is dumber than a bag of hammers. Our tale begins with Todd Shriber, the Communications Director for Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Montana), and his visit to attrition.org a computer security website where he sought the services of a hacker for a modest, one-time job. A 'hacker" initiates a discussion as to what the job entails. First, let's be clear. You are soliciting me to break the law and hack into a computer across state lines. That is a federal offense and multiple felonies. Todd assures them his offer is on the level he wants his college transcript altered to improve his GPA. The 'hackers' then have Todd jump through a number of hoops, includiing taking photos of squirrels. The saga goes on for several weeks, ending with one of the 'hackers' saying (in an almost comically profane missive) that they've been detected, and doom will shortly ensue. The story was confirmed by Network World's Paul McNamara, and has been reported by a Montana newspaper. (Shriber nonetheless tries to spin his way out of the hole by saying he 'got cold feet' and wanted out, and that 'these are people misrepresenting themselves for a laugh.') Shriber has been fired.
