Highland Games (Well, Sort Of)Monday, Feb. 20, 2006 12:01 AMCity officials in Highland, California, have passed a resolution, "prohibiting the expenditure of city funds for attending conferences, training seminars and/or workshops to be held in the City of San Francisco." Why? Because the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution against military recruiting in local schools. City Councilman Larry McCallon denounced the City by the Bay for its numerous sins, including its failure to support traditional marriage, family, George W. Bush, the military, and even God. "There are a lot of people up there who have some weird ideas, who are extreme in their views." Seems to me drafting a resolution against spending city funds in San Francisco is pretty extreme in itself. If the Department of Homeland Security were to hold a statewide conference in San Francisco, does that mean Highland wouldn't send anyone? And, don't forget that your municipal water district draws from the California State Water Project, which includes the San Francisco Bay and adjoining Delta regions.
