Anti-Colonial Bullshit

Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2010 4:13 AM

Whoof. Feeling a little crispy-fried today as a result of a nearly 12-hour shift (a co-worker called in sick, I remained on duty until the regular evening staffer clocked in at 3:00).

So the Very Serious Conservative Author Dinesh D'Souza writes, via Forbes Magazine, that President Obama has a Kenyan, anti-colonial worldview.

Whatever. That. Means.

We're a colonial power? Afghanistan and Iraq are part of the American Empire, and we have our covetous gaze lingering upon Iran? And it's a bad thing for President Obama to not think this way? Hello?

The vote on ending DADT in the military is a very close thing. But beyond the question of prejudice, I have to ask what the folks clinging to their little charade of equitable treatment are afraid of?

We already have gay and lesbian service members. What's going to change if they can suddenly acknowledge their sexual orientation?

Answer: NOTHING.

DADT was an ill-thought out policy to prevent repercussions that shouldn't even exist - preferential treatment, discrimination, hazing, harassment.

Sexual orientation isn't contagious. You're not going to become gay because someone in your unit is gay. You're not going to get humped in your sleep. (On the other hand, recall the allegations of rape and sexual misconduct levelled against KBR contractors in Iraq. Who, exactly, is running around with trouble keeping it zipped, again?)
