Regarding the tale of the dead computer, it appears a recent power outage had confused the CPU. Plugging the Mac in had shown the problem, but the moment we opened the case, the problem resolved itself.

How to enable the controller.

Normally, you press the PlayStation logo button until the system locks in on the controller. With Guitar Hero III, you have to first plug in a wireless receiver.

That's not the problem.

The problem is that you have to press a not-terribly-obvious button on that receiver in order for the system to link to the scaled-down Les Paul guitar.
