Apocalypse Wow!

Thursday, Jul. 27, 2006 1:20 AM

Is it just me, or do y'all find it a touch disturbing when religious folk like Rev. Jerry Falwell get a glassy-eyed look and wax poetical about the Israel/Lebanon conflict as a precursor to Armageddon, praise Jesus!

Regardless of what John's apocalyptic vision promises, I question that God will close the show by riding in on the back of a nuclear warhead a la Slim Pickens in Dr. Strangelove.

I'm not a big fan of Medea Benjamin, simply because her antics make it easier for conservatives to denounce her position on ... well, anything.

So her being thrown out of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's address before Congress is not only counterproductive, it's rude as well. Yes, perhaps al-Maliki's government is falling apart because we were high on magic democracy dust when we chose to intervene in Iraq, but he is the duly elected representative of a nominal democracy.

Speaking of antics, Ann Coulter strikes again this time, with a comment on The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch.

"I think that sort of rampant promiscuity does show some level of latent homosexuality," Coulter remarked, after being prompted by Deutsch to repeat a comment she made during a break.

Why is it assumed that promiscuity = homosexuality? Would that mean Thomas Jefferson was really gay? How about Rep. Henry Hyde and his 'youthful indiscretion'?

And wouldn't 'latent homosexuality' be, like, genetic? How can a choice be latent?

So it should come as no surprise that another newspaper has dropped Coulter's column.

(Note: I don't usually cite Someone Else's Blog, no matter how reputable, but there doesn't seem to be a transcript available through Deutsch's website.)

Finally, showing just how inept and clueless the Bush Administration is, the FBI has decided to create a unit to study the threat of weapons of mass destruction.

"I think it is fair to say that anyone who is concerned about the safety of this country and the future, their concern is weapons of mass destruction and particularly weapons of mass destruction in the hands of terrorists," FBI Director Robert Mueller said.

The new directorate (funny how this country keeps adopting nomenclature that sounds like a fascist state) will study the consequences of an attack, increase U.S. preparedness, and coordinate the government's response to any attack.

In other words, they don't know what the fuck to expect, we're not ready, and we don't have a fucking plan. And this is nearly five years down the road from 9/11.

This is not re-tooling or adapting to a new threat, this is fucking incompetence.

An Associated Press article does a nice job of fear-mongering on another subject: the rise of a pagan religion among prison inmates.

Michael Lenz, an inmate at the Augusta Correctional Center, is slated to die today for his role in the death of fellow inmate Brent Parker.
Parker was stabbed repeatedly during a gathering of inmates who are adherents of Asatru, who worship the pantheon of Norse gods.

But after a brief description of the tenets of this religion, the article goes on to warn that it is often associated with white supremacy, and cites a 1999 FBI report on domestic terrorism.

Now, those folks who don white hoods and burn crosses are associated with what faith, again?

And certainly, no other inmates have ever stabbed one another or crafted and concealed knives on their person, right? Just the creepy Thor-worshippers?

The article cites experts like Mark Potok at the Southern Poverty Law Center, who points out, "The kind of inmate who might be attracted to this is a white man who is looking for justification for extreme violence, who is looking for an ideology which explains why he should be the boss."

But, of course, evangelical Christians caught up in the myth of the male-dominated household and other charming practices like purity balls are, of course, nice, normal, and harmless.

That FBI studying WMD article must have been the one you sent me. . . brilliant. Good of them to get around to that.
