De-Biden Conquer?

Tuesday, May. 02, 2006 1:54 AM

On the heels of the amazing compromise to establish a unity government and show that we're really making headway in Iraq comes a seemingly odd proposal from Democratic Senator Joseph Biden.

Split Iraq into three separate regions, along ethnic and religious lines.

Which, to me, sounds pretty much like what Iraq was under Saddam. A country divided along ethinic and religious lines, with a Sunni dictatorship laid overtop.

Sheer genius, Senator. Brilliant. I mean, it's so obvious!

Spend billions of dollars, commit our troops to a long-term engagement, browbeat them about cooperating and getting their shit together ... and then slapping a fresh coat of paint over things and telling them it's New and Improved. Democracy! Tadaaaaaaa!

If there's no reason to work together, the parties won't bother. The parliament will become an ineffective debating society, and the first time someone doesn't like the government's stance, we're back to independent militias and revenge gangs.

What fun.
