Signs of the Apocalypse?

Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006 12:24 AM

Take heed and bear witness to the truths that lie within, for they are surely signs that the Apocalypse is nigh.

First up, someone hates Starbucks Coffee so much, they planted a bomb in the restroom. An employee spotted the suspicious device, police were called, and the item defused.

A spokesman for the SFPD would only describe the device as having the potential to cause damage had it gone off.

Next, "Newlyweds" Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson are selling the house that was the setting for their televised romance.

I don't have a lot of good things to say about 'reality' television, but folks, given how most of these shows are predicated around dishonesty and disrespect masquerading as 'drama,' is Simpson & Lachey's divorce that much of a surprise?

And the third sign of a world gone insane is the City of Berkeley, California, being sued for violating a group's First Amendment rights.

The Berkeley City Council saw fit to revoke the free berthing that the Sea Scouts have enjoyed for over six decades because the local chapter of the Sea Scouts are affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, known for its refusal to admit either gays or atheists. That policy violates the city's non-discrimination laws.

The Sea Scouts are suing on the grounds that the City Council is violating their right to free speech and freedom of association.

Funny, I don't ever remember scouting being that complicated.
